Fast food for Valentine’s day?
My favorite Valentine’s Day was dinner at Wendy’s and grocery shopping at Walmart! No I’m not kidding AT ALL! It was quite a few years ago but it still ranks as one of my favorites! I’ll explain more about why in a bit.
Valentine’s Day is very similar to a lot of other things in life. Who decided that Valentine’s Day meant that you should get cards and chocolates and a nice dinner and flowers and whatever else is suggested for that holiday. (There’s that word – Should.)
Just like anything in life, YOU get to choose what you make of it. Personally, I’ve always thought I would rather have my husband do nice things for me when he felt like making a gesture or because I was on his mind instead of because someone said that was the day he was “supposed” to. Now don’t get me wrong, we still do Valentine’s day but we just don’t do it the way most people do! We like to do something simple and sweet. I still get my kiddos Valentine’s gifts, generally a small box of chocolates and a nice card or a $5 Starbucks card or something. Just a little something to say “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
In my book Embodied Grace, I talk about what it means to find freedom in your life:
Embodied grace is embracing your truth; Embracing and loving your life; Embracing self-awareness by doing what is right for you and letting go of what others think you should do.
Letting go of what others thing you SHOULD do… there’s that word again, should.
Here’s the thing, if Valentine’s Day makes you happy, then by all means do it up and enjoy every minute of it, BUT beware of if or where you are feeling pressured to live up to a certain standard. It is a great time to evaluate what you really think about something and how you might do things differently.
2018 is going to be a lot about rebuilding or re-creating your own life and what you really want. So why not start with this holiday! What do you think about it? How do you really feel? If you could change it and do it differently what would that look like? Who would it effect? Do you have old beliefs that hold you to something that doesn’t make sense any more? Are you truly enjoying it? Questions like these really help you to dial in and start to see where you might be able to make changes or even help you see what you really love about it, and how to enhance it even more! Create a life you love every day!
Now back to Wendy’s and Walmart… That was THE MOST private dinner we had ever had! It was Valentine’s Day at about 7:00pm prime time for a Valentine’s dinner, and no one else was in the restaurant! HA!! Luckily for my hubby, I’ve never been real big on going all out for Valentine’s Day because I don’t like crowded restaurants, and busy places, so we had decided ahead of time that we’d just grab a quick bite and go get groceries. It was a great gift for me because most of the time I did the grocery shopping by myself and we had been really busy, so this was a nice time together…and I got French fries… so there’s that too! Who doesn’t’ love fries!
Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, whichever way you decide to celebrate it, or not.
