Taking care of yourself, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually …
If you know me or if you’ve heard me talk, you’re probably aware how highly I rate self care. It isn’t about being selfish or not taking care of anyone else. It is just about really truly taking care of yourself.
Now, I’m not talking about trips to the salon or anything like that (although those are high priority as well if that makes you feel valuable.) But what I’m really talking about is taking care of yourself emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally.
The practice of self care is going to look different for each of us. Here is a list of some basic self care tips:
- Drinking plenty of water
- Getting enough rest and good sleep (take a nap if/when necessary)
- Whole, healthy, clean foods
- Gratitude Journal/ daily affirmations
- 15 minutes each day in prayer/meditation
- buy yourself flowers
- 5 minutes per day to do “mindful breathing”
- yoga or other exercise
- Epsom Salt or Sea Salt baths
- take a 20 minute coffee break all by yourself and actually enjoy and savor the coffee! (and maybe a pastry with it!)
I want to encourage you to really really really put self care as a priority. I know it seems completely backwards when you’ve got a million things to do and a limited time to do it, but it really is important. You have to care for and nurture yourself in order to have the strength to do your daily chores or be good in your business. If you put yourself and your spirituality first, the rest will fall into place….. Like I said I know it seems like we should work really hard and then if we have time then maybe if we’re not too tired we’ll pray or meditate……but that is completely the opposite way to do it… I have found personally that sometimes in the moments when I am honoring myself by taking a break/bath/massage/meditation/etc that is when God speaks the loudest and then I have either an inspired idea or that day I’ll book a new client…… not that the “work” doesn’t have to be done too but it just doesn’t seem as much like work when it’s happening in the flow. And in order to be in the flow of life you have to listen to yourself/ your body/ your emotions. Sometimes when your emotions are out of control, two minutes of mindful breathing can completely reset the day!
I encourage you to practice self care each day for a full week and see if you notice the changes! If you truly take care of yourself for a full week, I can say that you’ll likely notice that your emotions will seem more stable, you’ll be more productive at work, and you’ll likely feel much happier.
